How to paint the walls in the kitchen?

It takes approx. 3 minutes to read this article

The time has come to refresh your kitchen! Refreshing your walls once in a while is definitely useful for any kitchen. But what and how to use it for the best effect?

What kind of paint to choose?

Not every paint works in the kitchen. The walls are exposed to moisture, dirt and even mould. You should take this into account when buying products for painting, so that you can enjoy the effect of your work for a long time

What paints are worth paying attention to in the store? First of all, latex paints and not only because of their resistance to moisture, but also due to the possibility of putting a new layer on the old paint and the fact that they dry within just two hours!

If you don’t find a color among latex paints that interests you, acrylic paints are an equally good choice. They are also resistant to moisture and by the way you can easily get rid of dirt from them, even using detergents

Short step-by-step instructions

Now that you have chosen your paint, it is time to get down to business! Before you start painting, you first need to thoroughly remove the old surface. This is the first step

Clean the wall thoroughly. To do this, you need to know the condition of the previous paint. If it adheres well to the wall, you can easily apply a new coat. If not – you need to remove the old coat

It is easy to check this with the so-called tape test. You stick a piece of painter’s tape to the wall and if, after abruptly tearing it off, there are pieces of paint left on the tape – it means that the tape is peeling and you have to remove it completely. If there are no paint fragments left on the tape, you just need to wash it thoroughly.

Once the wall is cleaned, you can move on to the next steps. Check to make sure there are no dings or cavities anywhere. This is the perfect time to refresh the quality of your walls. Mold in the kitchen is a fairly common occurrence and – thankfully! – not definitive. You can easily remove it with special preparations and cover it with dedicated paint. The same goes for irregularities. All you need is a putty which will fill in the gaps in walls and smooth out the surface in a few minutes.

Priming is the next step, thanks to which paint will adhere better. It helps to even out the absorbency of the substrate and guarantees a uniform painting effect. A well primed wall will not absorb as much paint, so a smaller amount will last longer.

Now you can start painting! Remember to protect all sockets and avoid draughts in the room you are painting as it makes the paint dry longer

Don’t limit yourself to one coat. Apply two or three, depending on what color you are covering and how good a quality paint you have. Also, make sure to wait the amount of time between coats as recommended by the paint manufacturer. Follow the directions on the packaging of the products you use, and everything should go well!
