What for the floor on the balcony?

It takes approx. 3 minutes to read this article

The right choice of flooring material will make the balcony not only aesthetically pleasing, but above all functional. What solution to opt for, so that the balcony surface can withstand rains, heat and frost? We present some ideas.

Materials used as cladding for balconies and terraces should be distinguished – in addition to aesthetic effectiveness – by durability and practicality. It is best to choose those with anti-slip properties, resistant to scratching and cracking, and easy to care for.

Resistance to weather conditions, to which the open space of the balcony is constantly exposed, is also important. Frost, humidity, heavy rain, heat, UV radiation, large temperature differences or street pollution – the balcony floor has to endure a lot, so resistance to damage and durability should be the features we pay most attention to when choosing the right material. We suggest which balcony floor is worth betting on.

Ceramic tiles

Ceramic tiles are the most common choice for finishing balcony surfaces. If they are properly selected and laid, they can serve even for several decades, maintaining an aesthetic appearance. High functional and aesthetic qualities are distinguished by porcelain stoneware tiles – their water absorption does not exceed 3%, which means that they are resistant to frost. Structural porcelain stoneware tiles, the surface of which mimics various textures, for example, the structure of stone, provide special security. Glazed porcelain stoneware tiles, on the other hand, are characterized not only by high utility values, but also by rich design.

Concrete balcony tiles

Concrete slabs are often laid on above-ground terraces and large balconies in single-family homes. Their advantage is their durability and high resistance to weathering and mechanical damage. They are also distinguished by their non-slip properties. Modern concrete slabs can imitate stone structures and look like sandstone, granite or marble, although they are much cheaper than these materials. Concrete by nature is an absorbent material, so the slabs should be waterproofed.

Composite boards

Composite boards are a great alternative to wood flooring on a balcony. They are manufactured from a composite of wood fibers and plastics, such as polyethylene. In color and texture they resemble elements made of exotic wood, but unlike wooden planks they are characterized by resistance to moisture, fungi and mold. Another advantage of composite boards is the ease of installation and care – we can wash them with water and detergents or wood-based composite care products.

Rubber boards

If children will be playing on our balcony, think about a floor laid with rubber boards. Made of durable but flexible rubber, they provide a sense of security, as they cushion any falls and protect against serious bruises. They are durable and do not deform under the weight of a person or balcony equipment, such as furniture. They are characterized by resistance to moisture, low and high temperatures or UV radiation, as well as extremely easy installation, which we can handle on our own. In addition, rubber boards are non-slip and pleasant to the touch, so you can walk on them barefoot in the summer.
